### Use the Product to Go Faster / Clearer

| Step | Feature | Benefit | How (evidence of benefit) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Viewing skill progress | **Unified skills graph** | Immediate visibility into position fit | The % completion (e.g., 66%) reflects the ratio of mastered vs. required core skills, recalculated in real time and reduces manual spreadsheet tracking. |
| Comparing ratings | **Multi-source rating types** | Balanced, low-bias skill validation | Combining self, supervisor, expert, and SkillCheck inputs reduces single-rater bias; discrepancies above 30% highlight calibration issues automatically. |
| Tracking change | **Ratings over time** | Detect learning impact and stagnation | Historical graphs show rating shifts post-training or reassignment, proving skill growth with date-stamped evidence. |
| Validating assessments | **SkillCheck integration ** | Objective verification of practical skill | Links assessment scores directly to the skill record; scores are calibrated against benchmark data, cutting review disputes. |
| Spotting hidden strengths | **Cross-role visibility** | Reveal underused or emerging skills | Optional and additional skills that reach ≥80% mastery surface in analytics, showing readiness for lateral roles. |

### Examples

- **Example 1:** A backend developer has 66% position fit. Reviewing ratings shows high supervisor scores but missing optional skills in API security. The manager assigns targeted learning.
- **Example 2:** A frontend engineer’s YAML skill rating improves from 20% to 70% after certification, confirming readiness for advanced projects.

### FAQ

**Q: Why do some skills show “0%”?**
A: The skill hasn’t been rated yet or no baseline was set for the role.

**Q: Can I add a new rater?**
A: Yes, choose “Invite to rate” from the skill’s detail panel.

**Q: What’s the difference between SkillCheck and Expert rating?**
A: SkillCheck comes from SkillCheck assessments; Expert rating is a human evaluation.

**Q: How often are scores recalculated?**
A: Automatically when a new rating or assessment result is logged.

### Pitfalls & Tradeoffs

- **Don’t rely only on self-ratings.** They’re useful for engagement but often optimistic.
- **Avoid overloading roles with optional skills.** Too many non-core skills dilute focus and skew position fit.
- **Check consistency between rating sources.** Large gaps may signal calibration issues or unclear expectations.
